CHEMTRADE CLOSES BEAUMONT, TEXAS PLANT IN PREPARATION FOR HURRICANE RITA
TORONTO, September 22, 2005 - Chemtrade Logistics Income Fund (TSX: CHE.UN) today announced that it has shut down operations at its chemical plant in Beaumont, Texas in preparation for the anticipated impact of Hurricane Rita. The shutdown is part of the plant’s hurricane preparedness plans, which have been implemented as a result of the latest predictions that the hurricane will hit the coast on Saturday morning.
Mark Davis, Chemtrade President and Chief Executive Officer, said, “At this stage our plant manager is closely monitoring the storm through constant contact with local authorities. Our first concern is for the safety of all employees, and we are taking all necessary measures to ensure our emergency plans are implemented as conditions warrant.” Mr. Davis said the plant would restart operations when conditions are safe and authorities have lifted any travel or other restrictions in the area.
The Beaumont plant processes spent acid for oil refineries and chemical operations in the area.
Chemtrade is one of the world’s largest suppliers of sulphuric acid, liquid sulphur dioxide (SO2) and sodium hydrosulphite (SHS), and a leading processor of spent acid, particularly in the U.S. Gulf Coast region. Chemtrade is also a leading regional supplier of sulphur and sodium chlorate; one of only two North American producers of phosphorous pentasulphide; and also produces zinc oxide at three North American locations. Chemtrade obtains these products from its own production facilities and through long-term marketing services agreements and distributes them to customers around the world.
