Sulphur
Elemental sulphur, obtained as a by-product of oil and gas production, is produced around the world. sulphur is predominantly used to produce sulphuric acid therefore the end use markets for sulphur are the same as sulphuric acid (please see sulphuric acid section). Given the by-product nature of sulphur, its production location is not determined by the location of demand for sulphur, rather it is determined by Oil and Gas market dynamics. Therefore, the logistics of sulphur marketing are critically important. Molten sulphur solidifies at a temperature of approximately 250 degrees Fahrenheit (120 Celsius). The product is shipped in specialized equipment in its molten state (typically for domestic shipments), or “prilled” with specialized equipment (typically for international shipments). Also, given sulphur’s by-product nature, and typically limited storage capacity at gas plants and oil refineries, it must be shipped in a timely fashion in order to avoid lack of containment impacting operations of production plants. Conversely, sulphur is typically used by large operations (fertilizer producers, pulp and paper, metals refining) and is typically a critical raw material for the consumers that use it in their processes. The hazardous nature of sulphur means that environmental, health, and safety concerns must be the top priority. Knowledge and resources must be in place to ensure that sulphur is handled in a responsible manner throughout the cycle of production to end use. We operate a molten sulphur terminal in Rotterdam for truck, barge and deep sea ocean vessels.
